01 / The story

Boarding for Breast Cancer was founded in 1996 inside the action sports world, and this year it marked 30 years. The center of it was the 19th annual Skate the Coast on Saturday, October 24: roughly fifteen miles from the Santa Monica Pier to Dive N' Surf in Redondo Beach.

The route stopped at Blauer Board Shop, Marina del Rey Lot 5, Dockweiler State Beach and Noble Park. Registration was a $50 minimum donation. The goal was $100,000; the ride usually raises around $75,000. The anniversary party the night before moved from Venice to The Deck in Hermosa Beach.

02 / The take

A pack of skaters rolling the Strand is one of the great moving pictures of the South Bay. Wheels on the bike path, the ocean on one side, the houses on the other, and the whole group stretching out and pulling back together like a peloton with no team cars.

And the reason they ride matters. Thirty years ago the action sports scene decided to look after its own, and it is still showing up, one push at a time, for fifteen miles.

Skate gave us the ground plane. Concrete, the coast path and the long push. Our RONIN skate study is set on a beach path just like this one, at the last hour of sun.
